NFL Players Protest by "Taking a Knee"
The Situation
Players in the NFL have been protesting against racism by kneeling during the National Anthem. This has come with a mixed responses from fans, some critical and some supportive. The first player to protest in this way was quarterback Colin Kaepernick, a former player for the San Francisco 49ers. As of writing this, he has yet to be signed by any NFL teams. He says that this is due to a collusion or agreement by owners within the NFL. He is attempting to sue the NFL, claiming that they agreed to keep him unemployed in response to his protests for equality and social justice.
Players are protesting to try to combat the issues of racial inequality that have increased in the United States this year. Some people believe the main factor leading to this inequality is the continued police brutality against African Americans while others believe it is because of Donald Trump siding with white supremacists. Whatever the reason, racial injustices must be stopped wherever possible. NFL players are fighting back by kneeling during the National Anthem.
My Thoughts
I think this is an interesting situation. The NFL players have brought more attention to the racial injustices with their protests which is a good thing. Their intentions are definitely right and just, however their actions were very controversial. Some people completely agree and respect their protests while others are against them. I do think that they succeeded with gaining publicity about the topic with these protests as the news is everywhere. Controversial topics tend to be more popular topics as there is more of a debate, leading to them being talked about more often. Topics like this also tend to reach a farther audience of varying ages, especially if news outlets begin talking about them.
Despite creating publicity, I do not really see any big changes as a result of these protests. Racism is still a large issue throughout the world. I do think publicity is important and it can be the start to making change. .
